Kirill Serebrennikov's Лето (Leto) – completed under house arrest – is about the punk rock scene in Leningrad in the 80s. Loosely based on the life of Soviet rocker Viktor Zoi, the film revolves around the relationship between Viktor Tsoi (Teo Yoo), Mike Naumenko (Roman Bilyk), and Naumenko's partner Natalia (Irina Starshenbaum).
Serebrennikov uses the music of Viktor Zoi's band Kino and covers of well-known rock anthems by contemporary Russian artists. He also plays with the cartoon elements of the music videos of the time, creating a homage to punk rock itself.
In the midst of all this, he skilfully captures a subculture that, influenced by David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Blondie, yearned for change and brought rock to Moscow.
And before the film begins, director Kirill Serebrennikov will answer Ivo Van Hove's questions!
