Erased Music: Julius Eastman at WDR 3 concert on 22 November

14.11.2024

Julius Eastman wrote minimal music with strong messages. As a black homosexual man, he explored his identity in his music and provoked the classical music scene in the USA. At the Ruhrtriennale, Wild Up snatches his music from oblivion.

Evil N*****, Crazy N***** or Gay Guerilla: Julius Eastman moulds musical revelations out of negative external attributions, non-conformist, uncompromising and honest. In the 1970s, the highly talented pianist was still part of the inner circle of the American avant-garde elite. He polarised with his provocative performances, which always made his identity as a black gay man an issue. Eastman died homeless and largely forgotten in 1990. Wild Up from Los Angeles has been working for several years to rediscover Eastman's works. In Erased Music, the Ruhrtriennale's three-year concert series dedicated to musicians who have been unjustly forgotten, they are reviving Eastman's memory.

Broadcast: Friday, 22 November 2024 from 20.03-22.00 on WDR 3 Konzert
The concert will be available to listen to for 30 days afterwards.
