From underground culture to a global phenomenon: an homage to the ballroom scene

Georgina Philp, known in the ballroom world as Legendary Trailblazer Mother Leo St. Laurent, invites you to the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum for an unforgettable evening full of glitz and glamour. At the Pump Into The Future Ball, the Ruhrtriennale will celebrate ballroom and its outstanding performers on the runway. A range of houses and participants will show off their talents in front of an international jury and compete with each other in classical ballroom categories to take home one of the coveted trophies.

Ballroom culture originated in the USA, where it was invented in New York in the 60s/70s by Black and Latinx trans women. Ballroom was introduced to Germany by Mother Leo with a first ball at the Berlin Voguing Out Festival in 2012. That same year she also founded the first local ballroom house, which was known at the time as the House of Melody.

To coincide with the Pump Into The Future Ball, Georgina Philp will also meet international icons of the ballroom scene for a panel talk about ballroom. In addition to the panel talk, there will also be workshops on voguing and runway given by the ballroom community.

With American jury guests Tabytha Margiela, Nekia Saint Laurent and Terror 007 (Shapes&Shades) this panel is dedicated to the theme Ballroom & Beyond
Moderated by Mother Leo Saint Laurent, this discussion offers a valuable opportunity to learn about the diverse aspects and challenges of the ballroom community and gain new insights.
The panel guests will address topics such as social work outside of the balls, for example in New York in the field of HIV work by organizations like GMHC and in youth work represented by HMI or the Kiki* scene. The discussion will explore how ballroom has established itself in Germany and its current status as a community structure, identification, and support system for growing scenes in various regions, such as North Rhine-Westphalia.
The panel will delve into the differences or overlaps between generations regarding the collective sense of community, expectations in ballroom, and the approach to dealing with violence and conflicts within the community. Looking to the future, the influence of social media on the engagement with or consumption of ballroom is growing – what are the implications for the newest and younger generations?

*In the scene, a distinction is made between "Major" and "Kiki". Kiki refers to the community that developed out of the major scene in the early 2000s, with a special focus on HIV/AIDS education for the younger members of the ballroom community.

Construction site information

Since 6 August, the A40 has been fully closed between the Bochum-West junction and the Bochum-Harpen junction due to the construction of a new bridge. Visitors to the Ruhrtriennale must be prepared for increased traffic on the diversion routes, which we have summarised for you here.
