Young voices and fresh sounds in Wonderland.

Ruhr Diamonds offers unique opportunities to get to know talented musicians from the Ruhr region. Every Saturday evening, up-and-coming musicians from the Ruhr region perform in the festival centre at the Jahrhunderthalle. The concerts in Wunderland not only offer free admission, but also the chance to discover and experience new, creative sounds from the region.

Joël-João (23 August)

The young musician Joël-João is a singer/songwriter from Cologne, formerly Dortmund. He is also active with his band. Joël-João has been making music for over 10 years and has had the honour of performing and presenting his art at many events and stages throughout Germany. He loves music and wants to share this love with other people by encouraging them to sing along or accompanying them in his workshops (music, songwriting and spoken word). His music contains many elements of indie pop, rock, soul and R'n'B.

Patina Records (30 August)

Statement rap bangers, dance hits and a lot of hunger – that's what the Dortmund rap collective Patina Records stands for. The artists impress with their variety of influences and backgrounds, which are innovatively combined to create a sound that is second to none and should not be missing from any playlist. Here, ignorant new wave meets OG German rap, techno meets the 80s and catchy hooks meet bars that are just waiting to be immortalised in social media captions. A constellation that, despite their differences, pursues a common vision that constantly scratches at the ravages of time without blindly following them.

KARMAKIND (6 September)

Like a curious child, KARMAKIND explores the world of electronic live music, composing a fusion of vocals, flute, guitar, and synthetic sounds. Sometimes meditative, sometimes playful, sometimes powerful and energetic - anything can happen. Genre limits dissolve in a transcultural mixture of downtempo and dub, organic house and psychedelic spheres, always leaving space for the surprising element of improvisation. With lyrics in Arabic, Kurdish, German, English, and Spanish, experimental, danceable, and imaginative sets are created, taking the audience on a dreamy, deep, and joyful journey.

Zainab Lax & Areezo Rezvani (13 September)

Gentle harp sounds meet the floating tones of the santoor and create a musical journey between tradition and modernity.

Zainab Lax (harp) is a versatile multi-instrumentalist and music therapist from Germany. She has been playing the harp since the age of seven and later expanded her musical journey to include oriental instruments such as the Indian sarod and the Persian tar. With roots in Germany, Turkey, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, she uses music as a means of self-discovery and empowerment, especially for people who have experienced flight.

Arezoo Rezvani (santoor) from Iran began playing the Persian dulcimer santoor at the age of 18. She was honoured as “Talent of the Year” in Isfahan in 2006. She studied Persian music in Iran. In 2019/2020, she successfully completed a certificate course in music education at the Landesmusikakademie NRW in Heek. She leads a Persian choir. Today, she delights audiences all over Europe with her expressive santoor playing.

MARNELE (20 September)

MARNELE does things differently. The newcomer from Bochum has decided that she doesn't have to choose between punchlines and poetry, reflection and fighting spirit, melancholy and self-empowerment, unequivocal statements and metaphorically coded messages. MARNELE is timeless poetry that finds expression in contemporary rap singing; it's a sharp, thoughtful, world-wearied look outwards and inwards; it's a little bit of Ruhrpott and a little bit of Paris. What always remains the same? MARNELE's music plays in darkened rooms and nocturnal settings and is always enveloped in an abysmally calming text, sound and visual aesthetic. At the same time, there is always an irrepressible energy that only rarely tips over into dreaminess – a lyrical and vocal acuity bursting with urgency that casts a surreal spell.
